Under-Desk Storage for Small Spaces: Drawers and Shelves Compared
If your desk has no drawers, storage mounted under the desktop adds space without taking up floor. The catch is that it also takes knee room and needs a compatible desktop. This guide compares four add-on drawers and two under-desk shelves by the specs their makers publish, including the size of the installed unit, not just the drawer box.

Drawers or shelves?
- Drawers close, so contents stay hidden and dust-free, and some lock. You need room in front to pull them out, and the drawer box makes the inside space smaller than the outside size.
- Open shelves are quicker to reach and suit bulkier items like a laptop or bag. Everything on them is visible, and nothing locks.

Before you buy: check your desk
- Installed width: measure the open space under the desktop between the frame's crossbars and legs, and compare it with the installed width, brackets included.
- Desktop thickness and material: most units screw into the underside. Check each product's minimum thickness above.
- Knee clearance: the VIVO drawers hang 4 in (DESK-AC03B) and 7.2 in (DESK-AC03L-B) below the top, and the FlexiSpot S07 hangs 2.8 in. Check this at your sitting height, and again if you also add a cable tray.
- Pull-out room: leave space in front for a drawer's extension (6.6–9.2 in for the VIVO drawers).

What we couldn't confirm
- VIVO drawer capacity (conflicting specs): DESK-AC03B lists 11 lb in its compatibility section and 21.2 lb in its description. DESK-AC03L-B lists 11 lb and 22 lb. Ask VIVO before loading them heavily.
- FlexiSpot S07 price: not listed on the product page when checked.
- UPLIFT Desk Drawer and Slim Under Desk Shelf: outside dimensions, desktop thickness and warranty terms are not listed on the product pages.
- Mounting hardware for the VIVO DESK-AC03B: described in an assembly manual PDF we didn't review.

Measure the free width under your desktop and your knee clearance first, then choose the format: a drawer to hide things or lock them away, a shelf for quick access to bigger items. Compare the installed size, brackets included, and rely only on capacity figures the maker states clearly.
