Cable Management for Standing Desks: Trays, Mounting and Slack

On a standing desk, cables have to travel with the desktop. Put the power strip in a tray under the desk, and the plugs move up and down with it, so only one cable needs to hang down to the wall outlet. This guide shows how to set that up, and compares four trays by how they mount.

Quick take

  • No drilling: the VIVO Clamp-on tray clamps to desktops 0.2–2 in thick.
  • Screws into the desktop: the VIVO Extra Deep tray, the FlexiSpot CMP502 and the UPLIFT FlexMount.
  • Clearest mounting instructions: UPLIFT's manual gives exact drilling steps for desks not made by UPLIFT.
  • Lowest profile listed: FlexiSpot CMP502, 3.5 in tall.
  • Leave slack: the cable from the tray to the wall has to reach when the desk is at its highest setting.

Why cable slack matters

When a standing desk rises, everything attached to it rises too. The desks with a published height range in our small standing desk comparison travel about 18 to 26 in between their lowest and highest settings. A cable that's tight at sitting height can pull on a plug, the outlet or the desk when the desk goes up, or snag on a moving leg. Keeping devices plugged into a strip in the tray means those cables move with the desk. You then only need to manage the slack on the one cable from the strip to the wall.

How to set it up

  1. List what's on the desk: monitor, laptop charger, lamp, speakers. Count the plugs, and check that your power strip fits the tray.
  2. Mount the tray toward the back of the desk, following its instructions and the desk-thickness limits above.
  3. Plug the desk devices into the strip in the tray.
  4. Run one cable from the strip to the wall. Raise the desk to its highest setting and make sure this cable still has slack and doesn't rub on a leg.
  5. Bundle the remaining cables along the frame or the underside of the desktop, away from the lifting legs.
  6. If you use a walking pad underneath, keep its power cord out of the walking area. See our walking pad setup guide.

Which tray fits your situation

Knee clearance

Trays hang below the desktop: 3.5 in (FlexiSpot CMP502) to 5.8 in (VIVO trays), more for the clamp-on model. On a small desk, check knee room at your sitting height, and again if you add a drawer or shelf.

Bottom line

Decide first whether you can drill. If not, a clamp-on tray that fits your desktop's thickness is the simplest option. If you can, a screw-mounted tray or basket gives a fixed position. Either way, put the power strip in the tray and leave enough slack on the wall cable for the desk's highest setting.
